Changing Corporate Cultures
Kathy has helped one of the largest refineries in the world change its safety culture. She has served as an integral member of the site's internal communications team, which has developed and executed a plan to successfully engage a workforce of thousands of employees and contractors to work more safely.

Central to the plan is an internal news organization that covers the site's progress. Key elements include:

  • A virtual newsroom
  • A daily news Web site
  • An internal TV news channel
  • A monthly color magazine
  • Weekly live safety meetings and quarterly town halls broadcast live

Kathy manages and edits news and photo content for the Web site, conducts television interviews and edits the monthly magazine.

Building Strategic Community Partnerships
Kathy builds consensus in seemingly impossible situations to get governmental approvals for large development projects.

When the developer of a mid-rise resort condo project learned that it could not get approvals to build on its beachfront property, Kathy helped broker a land swap between the private developer and its next-door neighbor, a county park.

Kathy also worked with the Texas General Land Office, city officials and others to build consensus and get approvals for the project. In the end, the solution was a win/win for all.

Changing Policy for Progress
A prime 1,200-acre, beach-to-bay tract of land was up for sale but there was one major hurdle. Beach access policy allowed unrestricted driving in front of what could be multi-million-dollar beachfront homes.

Representing the landowner, Kathy worked with state, local and community entities to change local ordinances to restrict vehicular access while still allowing full public beach access. As a result, the land was sold and the master-planned resort community was built, adding an estimated $500 million to city and county tax rolls.
